The arts are under siege – again. You can read all about the proposed budget cuts that will affect practically every arts organization in Miami-Dade County in our Arts on the Brink story.
Why is arts funding always on the chopping block? The arts are an integral part of our lives.
Imagine a world without the arts. No music on your daily commute. No books or magazines or stories on your favorite websites. No relaxing evenings at home with your favorite TV show or movie. No theater or concerts or dance performances for date night. No museums to inspire the imagination. No creativity.
I worked at Florida Children’s Theatre for five years, and I still operate their box office and help out when needed. I’ve seen first-hand how participating in and attending the theater opens children’s eyes, minds, and hearts. I’ve seen them blossom over the course of creating a show. I’ve watched as the theater becomes their safe place, a needed respite from school and home situations. I’ve marveled at how these children grow into young adults who can maintain eye contact, communicate with groups of people, and understand the value and necessity of teamwork. I know that the arts can change people’s lives.
Here at Biscayne Times, we are committed to giving our readers the full breadth of life along the Biscayne Corridor from local news to restaurants and nightlife and the arts. Our area is bursting with life and creativity, and while we love keeping you informed about local elections, politics, real estate news, and the goings on in our cities and neighborhoods, we also love telling our readers about all the wonderful things that can enrich their lives.
There’s so much happening every day and we can’t possibly fit everything between our covers each month. So, just as we bring you more news stories on our website, we’re going to do the same thing with the arts.
Each Wednesday beginning Aug. 6, look for the BT Arts Beat column on BiscayneTimes.com to find out what’s happening in theater, music, dance, and art along the Biscayne Corridor and beyond. Arts organizations in Miami-Dade County need all the support they can get right now, and we’re here to lend them a hand.
You can help too. Buy a ticket. Make a donation. Become a sponsor. Do your part to keep the arts alive.
