The city of Aventura is mourning the loss of city commissioner Jonathan Evans, who passed away overnight. Evans was 72 at the time of his death and had been battling a prolonged illness.
Aventura Mayor Enid Weisman released a statement, “Our city mourns the loss of a wonderful human being, public servant, and friend. Jonathan Evans brought intellect, wit, and care to his role as a commissioner and brightened all our lives. We will all miss him dearly.”
Evans was elected in 2020 to represent Seat 3, which is for residents south of the William Lehman Causeway. In addition to being a member of the city commission, Evan also served as the chairman of the Vice Provot’s Committee for the Biscayne Bay Campus and the co-chair of the Scholarship Committee.
Originally from Birmingham, England, he emigrated to the United States to be an educator at Shady Hill School in Cambridge, MA. He also did work with MIT in the field of Metallurgy. Evans retired in 1998 and became a resident of Aventura.
Even before being elected, Evans had a calling to civic service. Evans chaired the city’s Advisory Board for Community Affairs and was president of the “Lunch Bunch of Aventura,” a group that met to get to know others in the community. He also had served on his condo association and property owners’ in the Williams Island area.
According to the release from the city, Evans will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and dry British humor and wit.” The city commission will schedule a special election to fill Seat 3, but no details have been announced.
