Veteran South Florida political leader Sen. Shevrin “Shev” Jones has been elected as the new chair of the Miami-Dade County Democratic Party’s executive committee. Jones, who currently serves as Florida state senator for District 34, emerged as the front-runner for the position after recently announcing his candidacy.
A champion of education and community empowerment, Jones brings significance experience and dedication to his new role. Starting as a teacher, he taught students in AP chemistry before founding L.E.A.D. Nation, an organization promoting youth leadership and social entrepreneurship. Elected to the Florida House in 2012, his bipartisan efforts included advocating for issues such as incarcerated women, clean syringe exchange, youth sports safety and police body cameras. He’s more recently advocated for the accurate teaching of Black history in Florida schools and has been a vocal critic of the governor’s “Stop Woke Act.”
Today, Jones represents Florida’s 34th Senate District, which covers portions of Broward and Miami-Dade counties. In a statement, he expressed his commitment to revitalizing the Democratic Party in Miami-Dade County, emphasizing the importance of robust outreach and engagement with local communities.
“We’ve seen what happens when we don’t invest in robust, focused outreach and take communities for granted. It’s clear this moment calls for a reset for our Miami-Dade County party,” Jones said.
The election of Jones as chair signals a new chapter for the party, which has faced challenges in recent times. With prominent Democrats backing his candidacy, including Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Congressperson Frederica S. Wilson, Jones aims to reinvigorate the party's presence in Florida politics.
More than 100 members of the Democratic Executive Committee voted April 26, with Jones emerging as the clear choice for chair. Alongside Jones, Millie Herrera and Marco Reyes were elected as first vice chair and secretary, respectively, signaling a fresh leadership team for the party.
As Jones assumes his new role, he pledges to collaborate with organizers across the county to rebuild and register voters, engage with candidates, and increase Democratic turnout in upcoming elections. With his vision for a more inclusive and engaged Democratic Party, Jones hopes to lead Miami-Dade Democrats into a new era of progress and success at the ballot box.
