City of Miami Commissioner Sabina Covo has released a new plan to address public safety in Brickell, which has become a concern for residents amid recent shootings in the neighborhood.
Early on Oct. 22, a woman – later identified as Stefani Pinero – was shot in a Brickell parking lot on Southwest 12th Street and Miami Avenue. The following day, Pinero’s family members confirmed she was recovering from the critical injury.
Another shooting occurred in late August after a fight between men leaving a nearby nightclub resulted in multiple shots fired, injuring one individual and leaving bullet holes and a shattered window on cars nearby.
A press release sent out Oct. 26 reveals Covo’s plan to address the recent spike in gun-related crime by conducting a thorough analysis of all nightclubs in Brickell. She plans to deploy more police officers to the affected areas, including during typical off-duty hours when incidents have been more likely to occur.
Covo’s staff will also conduct an analysis of liquor sales in Brickell to curb alcohol-related incidents.
The commissioner has also created long term goals to address the ongoing issue throughout neighborhoods in District 2. She intends to expand police forces in the urban core and review local ordinances related to alcohol sales to inform potential recommendations and changes.
“In putting forward these proposed actions, Commissioner Covo hopes to emphasize the importance of community safety and encourage active cooperation between residents, businesses and law enforcement agencies,” reads the press release.
The extent to which Covo’s goals will be seen through is up in the air, however, as her announcement comes just days before an election that could either end her term in office or give her another four years.
That election will take place on Nov. 7, with early voting beginning Oct. 28.
