According to data from the USDA, nearly half of all adults in the U.S. report eating at least one sandwich per day. People call many different things a sandwich, but what we call a sandwich consists of two pieces of bread or a split roll, which can have meat, cheese, and many different fillings in between, and is usually enjoyed at lunch time. Though a sandwich is called different things in different places, it's universally loved.
La Sandwicherie (305-532-8934) 229 14th St., is one of Miami Beach's favorite sandwich spots. Franz and Elise Leforestier opened La Sandwicherie as a small counter in an alleyway off 14th St., in south Beach between Collins and Washington Aves., and it's been serving up tasty sandwiches for more than 30 years. La Sandwicherie, open until 5 a.m., it's a lifesaver if you're hungry after a late night out in SoBe, or if you've partied way too long at the notorious Mac's Club Deuce bar across the street.
The Tropical Sandwich with avocado, mozzarella, tomatoes, papaya, mango and pineapple is the biggest big hit; also popular is the Italian, with ham, Genoa salami, prosciutto and provolone. Vegan options are hummus, avocado, and vegan cheese. Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, red onions, black olives and cornichons are included in every sandwich. Taste one of their sandwiches on a crisp baguette, with their famous "magic sauce" vinaigrette, and you'll promise yourself you'll be back for another one every day. Their other locations are in Wynwood (786-409-2390)169 NW 23rd St.; North Beach (305-763-8278) 7349 Collins Ave.; and Sunny Isles Beach (305-763-8278) 17008 Collins Ave. Order online for delivery in downtown and Brickell (786-593-3101), where a new La Sandwicherie is opening in June 2025. La Sandwicherie Fort Lauderdale (305-519-2123) 1115 NE 9th Ave., is now open with delivery and pickup available via the Uber Eats app.
Loved by foodies, the Caracas Bakery opened their first location in 2019 in Doral (786-967-6687) 7884 NW 52nd St., followed by a second one in the MiMo District (786-967-6687) at 7283 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, and most recently in Coral Gables (786-901-1557) at 72 Miracle Mile. They're known for really good bread; of course they would have great sandwiches too. BLTs on sourdough bread with thick-cut bacon, frisée, tomato and mayo, and garlic aioli are absolutely addictive; another winner is the oven-roasted turkey stuffed with the same ingredients as the BLT; and the B.E.C. on a sweet potato bun with soft scrambled eggs, bacon, and American cheese makes a great breakfast. Caracas Bakery's father and son duo, Manuel and Jesus Brazon, won as "Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker" finalists in the James Beard 2024 Awards, and Caracas Bakery has been voted one of "10 Miami Bakeries that Showcase a World of Flavors" by the New York Times.
Graziano's (305-774-3599) 394 Giralda Ave., Coral Gables, an Argentinian steakhouse, is legendary for their thick Argentinian steaks cooked the traditional way over a wood-fired grill. Diehard Graziano's fans also know that the Graziano's Mercados (305-460-0001) at 2301 Galliano St., Coral Gables, and the newest location in Aventura (786-447-5034) 2920 NE 207th St., are places for great sandwiches too. The mercados have a deli, bakery, meat market, wine selections, and Argentine groceries. Carnivores love the sandwich de entraña, a grilled skirt steak sandwich with peperonata, Dijon mustard and chimichurri; and the iconic Argentinian sandwich, the choripán, made with chorizo, a beef and pork sausage, hot off the grill, and served on a roll. The chorizo may be whole or cut in half lengthwise, then it is called a mariposa (butterfly). It is usually served with chimichurri on the bread.
