Perhaps you missed the unveiling of Louis Vuitton’s Women’s Spring-Summer collection within the majestic surroundings of the Cour Carrée at the Louvre in Paris last October – or perhaps you caught it at last month’s downtown trunk show at Pérez Art Museum Miami.
What? You didn’t get an invitation to the private viewing? It’s OK, neither did we, but the iconic fashion house was kind enough to share highlights from the March 14 show, held on the museum’s expansive and shaded outdoor terrace with a view of Biscayne Bay.
Designed by Louis Vuitton artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière, the collection challenges the conventions of proportions, bringing the very large together with the very small – an LV signature. This attempted balance is found in the collection’s scale: zippers and snaps are oversized, clasps become belt buckles, and a scrap of leather is turned into an outfit, among other reinterpretations. The object of the game is to unsettle “the codes of femininity,” as explained in a news release, while also staying true to “the DNA of the house with references like locks, clasps and trunk corner pieces – all custodians of a narrative that endures.”
Small handbags prevail, and high heels fall to the wayside in favor of large, clunky boots with dresses of any length. Black and white dominates. Bare legs, knee-highs and lace stockings are in, then again, they have been for a while. What happened to pantyhose? Oh please, that’s so ’80s.
Many of the items from this spring-summer collection can be found at Louis Vuitton’s only local free-standing, women’s store, located in Miami’s Design District at 3801 NE 1st Ave. or at Louis Vuitton Saks in Bal Harbour Shops.
