There’s a lot going on for music lovers at the Miami Beach Bandshell this month. While cool, spring breezes remain, it’s a good time to check out the one-of-a-kind percussion and vocal trio La Perla May 2 at 8 p.m. or Brazilian singer Céu May 8 at 7:30 p.m. But the real highlight for this month is the Bosco Quartet, led by Brazilian guitar legend João Bosco, appearing May 31 at 8 p.m.
Bosco has become a key figure in the música popular Brasileira (MPB) genre made popular in the 1970s, and is known worldwide to lovers of Brazilian jazz and MPB. Despite his growing popularity outside of Brazil, Bosco has remained thoroughly attached to his homeland, rarely leaving it for extended periods. Instead, he travels via his music – though it is rooted in Brazil’s classic samba and bossa nova traditions, he combines it with rock ’n’ roll, jazz and other world rhythms into an eclectic, inventive, challenging brew. He has also collaborated with many leading artists from the world of jazz and pop music throughout his long-storied career.
Bosco was born in Ponte Nova in Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1946. While attending Ouro Preto University, he became steeped in American jazz, and particularly with the music of Miles Davis, in addition to the bossa nova sound of Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. While still at school, he began his longtime collaboration with lyricist Vinicis de Moraes, who contributed the poetic lyrics to Bosco’s music.
Rounding out the Joao Bosco Quartet are Kiko Freitas (drums), Guto Wirtii (bass) and Ricardo Silveira (guitar). This exclusive Florida concert at the bandshell is presented by Rhythm Foundation in partnership with Urban Jungle, and with support from Centro Cultural Brazil USA, among others.
