The arts have had it rough lately, but arts organization in Florida have had an especially bad time. In 2024 someone got their panties in a bunch over a play at a fringe festival so Governor Ron DeSantis’ punished every arts organization in the state by vetoing $31 million in state funding in the 2024-2025 budget. The state’s current budget includes a little more than $18 million allocated for the arts, but with a stricter criteria – only those organizations that score 95% and above will receive funds, leaving more than 700 organizations that previously would have qualified out in the cold.
In Miami-Dade County, cutting all arts funding was proposed, but public outcry and protests from the arts community followed, and the funds were restored to the county budget. The arts prevailed.
Creating art isn’t easy. Whether it’s an artist putting paint to canvas alone in a studio, or musicians coming together to make music, or dancers who’ve trained since they were children to create poetry on stage, or the cast and crew collaborating to make a playwright’s words spring to life, creating art is hard. It takes training, imagination, and precision, but it also takes something essential not always obvious to the naked eye. It takes heart. It takes love. It takes the unflinching desire to make people think, feel, and laugh, to tell a story that moves and entertains, to help an audience escape the mundane for a few hours. It takes the hope to inspire, and that maybe, just maybe, someone’s life will improved by art.
What follows is a comprehensive calendar of the 2025-2026 arts season along the Biscayne corridor and beyond. There are hundreds of performances, exhibitions, fairs, and festivals on the horizon, for all ages and tastes, and there are bound to be more added between now and May. Always check websites for the most current information. Take a look, participate, and enjoy all that the arts in Miami has to offer.
