Time to End the Hardemon Headache

I have noticed signs popping up all over the City of Miami and that can only mean one thing – it’s campaign season. As much as I dread the pandering and mudslinging that seems to permeate Miami politics, I also understand that our political process is how we reinforce our democracy. Therefore, I try to take the good with the bad.

This year’s City of Miami District 5 race does not disappoint when it comes to good and bad. One candidate stands out for all of the wrong reasons. Christine King appears to be a bright, young attorney on the surface. However, when I did my research I came to understand that she’s a protégé of Billy Hardemon – or, at least, she has worked for his foundation for years. That’s a little too close for comfort.

My main concern is that we need an independent person in the District 5 seat because we know that developers are chomping at the bit to make our little slice of paradise on Miami’s Upper Eastside into a cavern of high rises. Some of us remember the headache it was dealing with the City of Miami when Keon Hardemon was on the commission and we really don’t want to have an encore. We need a break!
