Art Listings March 2015

If early programming is any indication, 2015 may see relational aesthetics hitting its stride in Miami’s arts landscape. Following Pedro Reyes’s fascinating Sanatorium project at the newly christened ICA, DotFiftyOne Gallery has invited Argentinean artist Daniela Luna from APPETITE Gallery to create the Meaning Machine: a site-specific experiential laboratory focused on tackling existential concerns. Additionally, APPETITE artists Martin Legón and Ariel Cusnir have contributed works that invite reflection from both sides. Unlike Reyes’s Sanatorium, however, where the audience participates in a series of therapies within a “transient clinic,” the Meaning Machine targets the artists involved, who tirelessly read, research, mine data, and contemplate art in an effort to better understand the world around them. Luna’s work with the laboratory also poignantly zeroes in on our technological dependence: can information collected from cell phones illustrate a profound reflection based upon where we choose to eat, sleep, and play? Are the ghosts in the machine a reflection of who we are, or who we only imagine to be?
