Food news we know you can use

OPix_Dish_10-17ctober is a busy month for us Floridians. Not only are we dealing with the peak of an already busy hurricane season, but we’re also well into football season. Nowadays you’re probably spending your weekends cheering on your favorite teams and keeping tabs on your fantasy league.

While there’s nothing wrong with putting together your own watch party or heading over to a friend’s house, you’re better off leaving the hosting responsibilities to the pros so everyone can relax. There are plenty of great sports bars and restaurants that offer the two essentials for enjoying the season: big-screen TVs and bar bites.

At Batch Gastropub (30 SW 12th St., 305-808-5555) in Brickell, you’ll find both in ample supply. No matter where you sit or stand, there’s a television to keep you company as you enjoy the venue’s extensive selection of snacks and adult beverages. Carb-heavy items like the Mac Attack -- gnocchi, aged gruyere cheese, and Dorito dust -- and truffle fries are perfect for pairing with craft cocktails like the toasted pecan whiskey sour.

American Social (690 SW 1st Ct., 305-223-7004), another beloved Brickell bar, offers beer and big screens with a view. If your team is getting leveled, you can take a break and just enjoy the waterfront. During Monday games, make sure to take advantage of the restaurant’s generous burger deal: With the purchase of any beverage, diners can order American Social’s humongous namesake burger for just $5. An extra $2 will get you a side of fries.

Football fans further north have their fair share of hot spots, such as The Village at Gulfstream Park (901 S. Federal Hwy., 954-454-7000). Within the shopping plaza, you’ll find a bevy of options to watch some gridiron action. As the name suggests, Frankey’s Sports Bar features traditional bar food like beef sliders, tacos, nachos, and pizzas. For those who’d rather drink their calories, nearby Yard House is home to more than a hundred beers on drafts that can be ordered in larger-than-life sizes like yardsticks.

Football isn’t the only thing driving business to local restaurants this fall. Due to Hurricane Irma’s impact, Miami Spice has been extended through October. Until the end of the month, diners can continue to enjoy savings across the city. Not all restaurants that participated in August and September are participating this month, though. To avoid an uncomfortable situation, your best bet is to contact the specific restaurant before visiting.

In other news, an international social media star is bringing his talents to Brickell. Rumors had been swirling about the gigantic space that once housed Coya (999 Brickell Ave.), and it turns out the rumors were true. Salt Bae, the Turkish chef who went viral for his exaggerated salting gestures and knife play, is set to open an outpost of his popular Nusr-et Steakhouse concept in the building this month.

 

OPENINGS

Autumn in South Florida can be as brutally hot as summer. Thankfully, the new Cielito Artisan Pops (2750 NW 3rd Ave., 786-391-0648) in Wynwood is helping the community cool off with an array of ice pops and cake pops. You can choose from simple flavors like watermelon and strawberry or go all out with filled creations that come with toppings like torched marshmallows, brownie chunks, and chocolate pearls.

Another recent addition to the 305’s dining scene is Tacos vs Burritos Cantina (1888 79th St., 305-868-2096) in North Bay Village. The concept proves you can have the best of both worlds in life -- at least when it comes to Mexican cuisine. Although tacos and burritos get much of the spotlight, there’s more to the place than its namesake items. Expect tasty selections like quesadillas, tortas, and tostadas, too.

 

CLOSINGS

Last month several notable closures rocked Miami’s dining scene. Brickell, in particular, suffered a number of losses, including Sushi Maki and River Yacht Club. The latter’s shuttering will hopefully be temporary. The venue, which also houses the Asian eatery Dashi, has closed until it can repair significant damage from Hurricane Irma.

Over the bridge, downtown’s db Bistro Moderne has also called it quits. In its place will be Boulud Sud, a Mediterranean concept from acclaimed chef Daniel Boulud that’s set to open in December.
