Food news we know you can use

APix_Dish_12-16rt Basel always looms over Miami like an ominous yet colorful little cloud, bringing cool weather and holiday cheer (or fear) with it. Not only is there a lot to see and do, but a lot to eat as well, so let’s get right to it.

Sweet teeth will surely tingle when the forthcoming wave of sweet shops arrives in Miami. Wynwood’s crown jewel pop-up, The Salty Donut (50 NW 24th St., Ste 103), is finally ready to move into its permanent home across the street in the Wynwood Arcade. Although no date has been set as of writing, management speculates it will be ready right in time for Art Basel.

Also on the way is Cindy Lou’s Cookies, an artisanal cookie shop by former Barton G pastry chef Cindy Kruse. Hot off a successful Kickstarter campaign, Cindy Lou’s will open in Little River within the next couple of months. You’ve undoubtedly seen Kruse’s handiwork sitting pretty on counter tops all over Wynwood, including Jimmy’z Kitchen (2700 N. Miami Ave., 305-573-1505) and Panther Coffee (2390 NW 2nd Ave., 305-677-3952). Now it’s her time to shine with a dedicated storefront and larger facility for producing those signature handmade cookies.

Brickell’s massive shopping oasis, Brickell City Centre, is already home to some big names -- Sugar (788 Brickell Plaza, 786-805-4655), Quinto La Huella (788 Brickell Plaza, 786-805-4646) -- with more on the way. But the one I’m most excited about is one you wouldn’t necessarily expect: Luke’s Lobster. Since 2009, Luke’s Lobster has been a staple of the East Village, renowned for their signature lobster roll made with a quarter pound of lobster on a split top roll, butter, mayo, and a secret seasoning that surely holds the key to what puts this deceptively simple roll over the top. It’s scheduled to open soon, although there is currently no exact date.

Talk about star power. Coya and Zuma restaurateur Arjun Waney is hard at work opening his next big hit: the first stateside La Petite Maison, the esteemed London-based eatery overseen by three-star rated Michelin Chef Patron Raphael Duntoye and Bob Ramchand. La Petite Maison will open in Brickell and will focus primarily on French-Mediterranean cuisine with a little Italian influence thrown in for good measure.

Good news for those of us who have had it with insipid takes on Japanese cuisine: Wabi Sabi is on its way to the Upper Eastside. Managing Chef Shuji Hiyakawa, who grew up in Japan, is committed to bringing traditional Japanese food and sushi with a hint of American pizzazz to Miami. Expect something different yet refreshingly simple. With a little luck, the restaurant should be open by the end of the year.

The popular South Beach fast-casual joint Dirt will open a pop-up in the expanding Aventura Mall. The timing couldn’t be better as the food court, previously every shopper’s respite from the hustle and bustle of Florida’s largest mall, will temporarily close to accommodate expansion (which will make Aventura the second largest mall in America). The pop-up will focus on small grab-and-go dishes, like sandwiches, salads, granola bars, and even pretzels, and will feature a variety of vegan, paleo-friendly, and gluten-free options.



As mentioned earlier, Brickell is fast becoming a serious contender as Miami’s go-to destination for unbeatable cuisine. Two new restaurants recently opened to fanfare in the stylish new SLS Brickell, both helmed by James Beard Award-winning chefs: Michael Schwartz’s Fi’lia (1300 S. Miami Ave., 305-912-1729) and Bazaar Mar by José Andres (1300 S. Miami Ave., 305-615-5859).

Fi’lia is the master chef’s foray into Italian fare with a Mediterranean twist, a natural progression for Schwartz, who has made an indelible dent in Miami’s culinary scene with his signature farm-to-table cuisine that is fresh, light, and simple.

At Bazaar Mar you can expect imaginative takes on seafood in its many forms, a specialty of chef José Andres. This is a most auspicious start for SLS Brickell.

You’re not the only one enjoying the gorgeous seasonal weather. Too many cute dogs to count are on the move, and Wynwood is smartly anticipating their arrival. Dishes for Dogs (2561 N. Miami Ave., 305-505-5712) is a new dog-friendly one-stop shop offering homemade treats, supplements, and whole meals tailored to your dog’s dietary needs. If you eat well, why shouldn’t your dog?
