An eight-channel tapestry of animated motion and spirited clamor, More Sweetly Play the Dance exemplifies artist William Kentridge’s career-long passion for exploring the poetics of film, animation, and music. Expressing the stirring and formidable realities of contemporary life in his native home of South Africa, Kentridge’s work explores the ambiguity and complexity of social conflicts in the age of globalization. Throughout his distinct illustrative process of erasure and redrawing the animated elements within his films, the artist champions the power of process while revealing personal and universal truths. In his own words, he states, “There’s a desperation in all certainty -- politically uncertainty, philosophically uncertainty, uncertainty of images is much closer to the way the world is.” And in the world he creates, bodies in the throes of power, sickness, freedom, violence, and enslavement move in tight choreography, galvanized by the innate life force inhabiting processional motion and sweeping brass musical cadences. Figures brandish ambiguous symbols of war, religion, and disease, joining in a collective danse macabre. Reverent of death’s triumph, this morbid carnival is ultimately a dynamic celebration of resilience and life.
